Katyn’s point being (in case it wasn’t explained well enough, I’m never sure on that) is that he’s had plenty of oportunities to get rid of her and he’s taken advantage of none of them. While there is a story reason he might want to keep her alive, that was actually why she was asking him why he saved her a few pages ago. If he was keeping her alive for his own gain, he probably would have said so, but since he didn’t, it’s more likely that he does feel a connection to her and just doesn’t want her hurt or killed, which would mean, yes, he was a part of the person she knew.
